Notably, Mikkelsen has demonstrated a remarkable prowess in team events, securing victory in the Danish Team Championships on four occasions (2000, 2007, 2010, and 2012) and triumphing in the Nordic Open Team event in 2004.

Beyond his accomplishments as a player, Mikkelsen has emerged as a key figure in the organizational landscape of backgammon. He has served as President of both the European and Danish Backgammon Federations, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the game at both regional and international levels. Mikkelsen’s contributions extend to tournament direction as well, as he has overseen prestigious events such as the Monte Carlo World Championships from 2010 to 2014, the Nordic Open from 2009 to 2018, Gibraltar Open for 5 years and various tournaments in Denmark.
