The Danish Grandmaster

Jakob Rasmussen is a passionate backgammon player and dedicated teacher of the game, with roots in chess that stretch back to his childhood in the northern outskirts of Copenhagen. From the age of 9 until 21, he honed his strategic thinking and analytical skills as a strong chess master. However, it was during the early 1990s that Jakob transitioned to backgammon, immersing himself in the intricate world of the ancient board game.

During his initial foray into backgammon, Jakob predominantly engaged in chouettes and money games, until life’s responsibilities prompted a hiatus in 1999. After completing his university education and welcoming his daughter into the world, Jakob embarked on a fulfilling career as a consultant, specializing in IT projects of significant scale. Alongside his professional endeavors, he devoted his time to mentoring young project managers and facilitating groups focused on finding purpose and fulfillment in both work and personal life.

In recent years, Jakob has reignited his passion for backgammon with fervor. He has dedicated himself to the game, meticulously recording his matches and competing online under the alias “Llabba” on platforms like Heroes and BGG. Determined to surpass his previous skill level, Jakob strives to attain mastery in backgammon once again.

Among his notable achievements since returning to the game, Jakob has reached impressive milestones. He attained the prestigious G1 rank on BMAB (Backgammon Masters Awards Bureau), showcasing his exceptional skill by consistently playing under 3.0 PR (Performance Rating) across over 300 matches. Additionally, he reclaimed the title of Danish Champion for Teams with his recreated team from the 1990s, Røde Stjerne 2.0, alongside esteemed Danish players from that era.

Jakob’s success extends beyond national borders, as he clinched a silver medal in the online Team World Championship and secured a fifth-place finish in the individual Online World Championship. Notably, he has earned selection to the Danish National Team for the past two years, with aspirations of claiming victory in the upcoming Team World Championship in Stockholm in the summer of 2024.

With a wealth of experience, unwavering dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, Jakob Rasmussen continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of backgammon, both as a formidable competitor and a passionate advocate for the game’s enrichment and enjoyment.
