Graduating from the Faculty of Law, Department of Juridical Studies in 2003, Akiko’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2012. Despite facing this daunting challenge, she found solace and strength in the game of backgammon, which she credits for transforming her life.

During chemotherapy treatments, Akiko immersed herself in studying backgammon, using it as a means of distraction and empowerment. Her passion for the game grew exponentially, fueled by her relentless pursuit of excellence and her desire to overcome every obstacle in her path.

With the support of her husband, also a backgammon player, Akiko underwent surgery and embarked on a journey to become the Backgammon World Champion. Despite enduring physical pain and adversity, she emerged victorious, winning the Super Jackpot division at the World Championships in Monaco in 2013.

In 2014 and 2018, Akiko achieved an unprecedented feat by winning the main event at the World Backgammon Championship, becoming the first Japanese person and female of any nationality to claim this honor twice. Her remarkable achievements have cemented her status as a trailblazer in the world of backgammon.

Ranked 3rd on the Giants of Backgammon in 2015, Akiko shattered gender barriers and inspired a new generation of players with her unparalleled skill and determination. Beyond her individual success, she is dedicated to promoting backgammon and sharing her knowledge with players of all levels as a mentor.

After her second win in the world championship, Yazawa continued to dominate the backgammon circuit with her exceptional skills and unwavering determination. She embarked on a winning streak, securing victories and prizes in both domestic and international tournaments. Her consistent success further solidified her reputation as one of the most formidable players in the backgammon world, inspiring admiration and respect among her peers and fans alike.
