Avi “Sheshbesh” Cohen, a luminary in the world of backgammon, was born in Israel in 1978. From a tender age, Avi displayed an affinity for the game, quickly mastering its intricacies within the unique context of Israeli and Middle Eastern play, where rules diverged from the standard. Despite this, his talent shone brightly, setting the stage for a remarkable journey in the realm of competitive backgammon.

In 2008, Avi relocated to Miami, where he embarked on an entrepreneurial venture, founding a successful car care company specializing in vehicle detailing and maintenance. While his business flourished, Avi’s passion for backgammon remained undiminished.

It wasn’t until 2019 that Avi delved into the broader landscape of backgammon, immersing himself in the intricacies of the game’s international rules and competitive scene at a local club. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Avi embraced online play, recognizing its value in sharpening skills and fostering a global community of players.

Avi’s transition to live tournaments was nothing short of spectacular. In 2021, he made an indelible mark on the circuit, securing victories in prestigious events across the United States. Among his triumphs were the Advanced Consolation titles at the Sunny Florida Backgammon Championship and the Las Vegas Open.

But Avi’s winning streak didn’t stop there. His insatiable drive and strategic acumen propelled him to further victories, with a string of notable wins including the DMP Champion title at the Cyprus Open 2022, the Championship Division at the Sunny Florida Backgammon Championship in 2023, the Texas Speedgammon Championship in 2024, and the Last Chance winner at the New York Metropolitan Open in 2024.

In addition to his solo successes, Avi proved equally formidable in doubles play, clinching the top spot at prestigious events such as the Jamaica International Backgammon Championship and the Atlanta Classic as well as finalist in the Cherry Blossom.

Avi, known in online circles as Sheshbesh, is a relentless force in the digital realm, consistently securing victories and amassing an impressive collection of titles. His prowess on the virtual battlegrounds is matched only by his strategic brilliance and unwavering determination. Currently holding the esteemed rank of Master M3 by the BMAB, Avi’s standing serves as a resounding testament to his formidable game strength, solidifying his status as a true master of the game.

Through this innovative platform, he provides aspiring players worldwide with access to top-tier education, equipment, and reduced-cost entry and trips to live tournaments.

As a seasoned teacher and mentor, Avi’s influence extends far beyond the tournament table. His pioneering 2-day boot camp seminar has equipped countless players with the skills and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of competitive backgammon.

Driven by his unwavering passion for the game, Avi embarked on yet another ambitious endeavor – the creation of the Miami Open Championship. Set to debut in early December 2024, this event promises to be a milestone in the American backgammon calendar, further solidifying Avi’s legacy as a visionary leader in the sport.
